The iPhone 8 and X both have the A11 chip. This could be a year that all models that support iOS 16 will support iOS 17. Especially since this year they say there will be more under the hood improvements over major changes. I would guess that the 8 and X will get support for iOS 17 but most likely won’t get iOS 18 support.
But I'm restricted from using some games and important apps because iOS 13.3.1 is not supported. Like Pokemon Go requires at least iOS 14.2 and apps like iMovie for video editing and Uber require recent iOS software update. There are more apps and games that don't operate in my phone anymore. This phone is my daily driver for work and university.

If you want to use it semi-regularly or regularly, yes. iOS 15 is a big step up from iOS 12. I wouldn’t worry about performance because Apple did a great job on maintaining the 6S smooth and fast, it’s unlikely you’ll see a difference. The biggest reason to upgrade is app compatibility. iOS 15 will continue to get third-party app support

If you want to save your data , backup your phone then restore to 15.6 RC then edit the backup and change the version number but I heard there will be problem with iCloud so you can downgrade to 15.6 and then update to 16.1.2 using Delay OTA Have you updated to iOS 15.1?
